About Border Air Training

Border Air Training is the premier flying training organisation in the North West of England. Situated at Carlisle Airport close to the Scottish Border, it offers unrivalled access to the Lake District, Pennines, Hadrian's Wall and the Southern Uplands of Scotland.

Border Air Training was established in 1991 by Bruce Blenkharn and has steadily grown to its present size. Although

operated to the highest professional standards, Border Air Training prides itself on its friendly, relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Over 100 students have trained for their PPL with BAT. Many go on to take advanced flying training with BAT, including the Night Qualification and IMC rating. Several ex-BAT students have gone on to make a career in commercial aviation. Currently BAT has about 20 students at various stages in their training.

Once the student has gained his PPL he or she can then rent aircraft from BAT for solo flying. For more frequent fliers, BAT operates a group scheme which can provide access to low cost flying.

Carlisle Airport offers all the advantages of a full Air Traffic Control service, yet there are seldom any of the delays so often experienced at larger and busier airports. In addition, Cumbria consists largely of uncontrolled airspace, which is ideal for training (the controlled airspace around other, larger airports can extend for many miles and valuable time is lost transiting to and from the training areas).

The Flying Instructors at Border Air Training all hold professional flight crew licences, and their experience contributes significantly to the standards of training you will experience with Border Air Training. There is always a CAA authorised examiner on staff, so all written exams and flight tests can be taken at the school.

Whether you want to experience flying for the first time, are thinking of getting your pilot's licence or already have a licence and would like to rent an aircraft, you'll be made very welcome at Border Air Training. We look forward to seeing you soon!
